Record your own playback shortcuts
Open Playstate Settings → Keyboard and enable global shortcuts. Click an action's recorder, then press the combination you want. Include Command or Control and another modifier. Escape cancels recording; Delete clears a binding. Duplicate combinations, reserved combinations, and registration failures are shown in the pane.
While a recorder is listening, Playstate suspends its global shortcuts so the combination does not also control playback. Shortcuts resume when recording finishes or is cancelled. Restore Defaults returns all bindings to the keys below.
Default keys
| Action | Keys |
|---|---|
| Play or pause | Control-Option-Command-P |
| Previous / next | Control-Option-Command-Left / Right |
| Show or hide widget | Control-Option-Command-W |
| Volume up / down | Control-Option-Command-Up / Down |
| Mute or unmute | Control-Option-Command-M |
Playback shortcuts control the current enabled source. Choose which playing app or speaker takes priority in Settings → Sources. Widget shortcuts show or hide Playstate's artwork widget.
Volume and mute
Volume shortcuts change the current source's volume by 5 percentage points where source-volume control is available. They do not change your Mac's system volume. Mute or unmute uses the app or speaker's available mute control, or restores the previous volume for players that implement mute through volume.
Experimental Qobuz has no app-volume control in Playstate. Check the supported music apps guide for other player limits. Playback and customization shortcuts follow the trial and license rules.
If a shortcut does not work
First try the same control in Playstate's menu. If that fails too, check the current source's status and permissions in Settings → Sources. If only a keyboard combination fails, confirm global shortcuts are enabled, read the error in Settings → Keyboard, and record a different combination. Another app or macOS may already use the keys.
For volume, confirm that the source has a working app or speaker volume control. If the trial has ended, licensed controls need a valid license. Include the action, source, macOS version, and any displayed error when contacting support@playstateapp.com.
Try it on your Mac
The full app is free for 1 day, starting when it first connects to a speaker or you use a playback or volume control. No card is required. A personal license is US$7, paid once.
